Flatbed vs regular tow truck for an AWD car, does it actually matter?
Flatbed vs regular tow truck for an AWD car, does it actually matter?

I've got a Subaru Forester with all wheel drive and unfortunately the transmission has been acting up to the point where I don't feel safe driving it to the workshop, something about the way it's shifting makes me think continuing to drive it could cause way more damage. I need to get it towed but I've read conflicting things about whether AWD vehicles absolutely need a flatbed or if a regular tow truck with the rear wheels on a dolly is fine. Some people online act like towing an AWD car with any wheels on the ground will destroy the drivetrain instantly while others say that's overblown and modern systems can handle it for short distances. I'm looking at a Sharjah car towing recovery service through car battery replacement sharjah and they seem to have both flatbed and regular options available, but obviously the flatbed costs more and I'm trying to figure out if the extra expense is genuinely necessary or just a precaution that's overkill for a 15 minute tow to a garage. I called the dealership and they were unhelpful as expected, basically just said use a flatbed without explaining why or what could happen otherwise. Anyone with actual mechanical knowledge or experience towing AWD vehicles who can give me a straight answer, I don't want to cheap out and destroy my car but I also don't want to pay extra for something that doesn't matter?
